WEEKLY RATE – Rates Rise, Most Expect the FED to Raise Rates In June or July

May 2016

Interest rates started off last week with some tough sledding but since then have improved some.

The Mortgage Backed Security (MBS) market closed the week trading down -53 bps.  Monday through Wednesday all had big losses but the market rebounded slightly on Thursday and Friday.

Many FED officials are commentating that the Fed will likely increase rates in June or July of 2016.  At this point in almost seems a foregone conclusion.  Most analysts I watch expect mortgage interest rates to rise in the coming months as well.

May 2016

Interest rates continued to be “Steady Eddie” last week.

The Mortgage Backed Security (MBS) market closed the week trading up + 16 bps. This is the second week in a row where the MBS market hasn’t had much movement – keeping rates in the same narrow range.

Oil prices moving higher have put some pressure on interest rates to rise but the 25 day MBS average has provided a safety net and continues to help the MBS from a large movement down.

WEEKLY RATE – Rates Holding At 3 Year Lows

May 2016

Interest rates had another good week with the Mortgage Backed Security (MBS) market closing the week trading up + 34 bps.

Interest rates are right at or near 3 year lows.  May 2013 is when rates spiked drastically after news that the FED would slow their asset purchasing which was artificially keeping rates low.

Right now rates are great, but there is a lot of uncertainty in the market that will eventually cause a movement.  A weakening dollar, fluctuation in oil prices, uncertainty in regards to the FED changing the Federal Funds rate, concern regarding the global economy.

I still believe in locking right now and taking advantage of the 3 year lows.

May 2016

Happy May!!

Interest rates moved slightly lower last week with the Mortgage Backed Security (MBS) market trading up 3 of the 5 days and closing up +41 bps.

The FED didn’t raise rates on Wednesday and most don’t expect them to until Fall.  Overall rates are slightly better, but still in the same small range they’ve been in since February.

Friday is the US Non Farm Payroll report which is the biggest indicator of where rates will head in May.
